Low-Intensity Exercise Is Beneficial for Beginners

Los Angeles, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/29/2014 -- Those who are wishing to become more active for the sake of their health often assume they must jump instantly into a high intensity workout to get any benefits. This is a common misconception, and studies are finding that light-intensity exercises can offer just as many benefits as the higher impact ones, and are more favorable for those just starting out.

During the course of a study done by professors at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY discovered that those who spent more time moving around during the day had healthier insulin and triglyceride levels than those who were sedentary. Even those that didn’t engage in the exact amount of exercise recommended by the national guidelines still received benefits to their health.

“These findings demonstrate the importance of minimizing sedentary activities, and replacing them with some light-intensity activities,” recommends researcher Paul Loprinzi. He went on to say that it’s important to find ways to minimize long periods of sitting during the day and find small ways to be active. Pacing while on the phone, or holding walking meetings rather than sitting ones are simple ways to become more active while on the job.

Outside of work, a light walk or jog with a friend or a few extra loads of laundry per week can be a good way to start becoming more active, and over time this activity can be increased into longer periods of time and eventually one will be engaging in the full recommended 150 minutes of activity per week.
