Philadelphia, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/16/2014 -- Maloumian Oriental Rugs announces an expansion of Aubusson and Persian rugs in stock. The growing range of unique carpets is featured at the store’s Mt. Airy showroom.
Often characterized by clusters of flowers against dark blue or brown backgrounds, and made in wool, the Aubusson rug was birthed in France during the 1700s, namely in the villages of Aubusson and Felletin. Weavers of this lineage were renowned as some of the best rug weavers in the world and had to endure a long apprenticeship in order to be called a “Master of Tapestry.” In fact, overseen by the French Ministry of Arts, the Aubusson factory is still producing rugs today. Inspiration for the rugs’ motifs is said to come from textiles produced by Flemish and Netherlandish people.
The Persian rug sprung from Persia – currently Iran. The country is known for a long and ancient tradition of carpet weaving. Even today, it is estimated that Iran has over 1.2 million carpet weavers. Inspiration for the motifs of Persian carpets are said to come from Persian gardens. Motifs on these rugs often include florae and birds, as well as animals. The carpets are usually crafted in wool, but are also made in cotton and silk. Natural colored yarns, such as burgundy, navy blue and ivory are culled from wildflower dyes.
Maloumian Oriental Rugs features a broad selection of Aubusson and Persian carpets in various shapes and sizes. Additionally, they sell Tibetan rugs made of wool from Tibetan highland sheep.
