MamaBear Issues a List of Dangerous Social Apps Parents Need to Ban

Tampa, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2014 -- The online social scene is getting more dangerous for young people. A variety of apps that permit users to create accounts and interact anonymously have triggered a risky situation where bullies can post harassing comments from behind a veil and receive little to no consequences for their actions.

Even with public attention and calls for the sites to reevaluate their platforms and moderation systems, these apps are still growing in popularity, and many parents remain unaware of their potential harms.

To educate parents on the subject, MamaBear Family Safety app released a list of the most dangerous apps and how they work. The blog post, “Social Apps MamaBear Recommends Parents Ban” strongly suggests that parents ask their kids to stop using Yik Yak, Ask.fm, Tinder, Whisper, and Secret.

“These apps aren’t as popular and recognizable as platforms like Twitter and Facebook,” said MamaBear president Robyn Spoto, “so many parents don’t even realize they are out there, let alone the dangers they may bring. But they need to know they exist, and they need to tell their kids to stay away from them.”

The MamaBear article calls out inefficient moderation systems as one of the primary problems with the apps.

“These new social platforms don’t have the processes and programs in place yet to Effectively protect young users or stop them from accessing the apps,” Spoto continued.

While at least two of the apps have a 17+ age restriction, younger kids are still regularly accessing the platforms. Until proper regulation and banning systems are set in place, MamaBear says it’s best to ban the apps and direct kids to safer social spaces.
