Engineer-to-Order companies manufacture complex products with intensive design requirements. The designs often create items that are one offs. One of a kind product do not require full-blown product lifecycle management, but need solid revisionary control through production (and later as spare parts are required.) Streamline Systems Manufacturing Revision Control provides visibility and control of item changes to ensure that products are manufactured to the latest specification and drawings and are always available under "as-used" condition.

David McPhail, President and CEO of Memex Automation, was interviewed by Business News Network. McPhail asserts, “Modern manufacturing equipment costs the same (in equivalent currencies) across all manufacturing jurisdictions (North America, Europe, China, India, etc.). Raw materials are priced as commodities in a common currency (usually USD). It is the cost of labor that varies widely between manufacturing zones. The true cost of labor contains all the usual overhead costs that manufacturers are required to pay (taxes, health care costs, insurance, burdens, etc), and is not necessarily limited to what the employee is paid on an hourly basis. These "grey" costs also vary widely between developed and developing manufacturing zones.”

Engineer-to-Order systems are designed to resolve several core problems; the most important being the speeding up of the definition and acquisition of materials. The time it takes to produce a product in an ETO company is totally dependent on how long it takes to define the items on a BOM and acquire these materials. Complications occur when designers are required to release the BOM in stages, not all at one time. They must also deal with change requests from the client and manufacturing throughout the project. ETO firms need a system designed for this type of concurrent engineering that dramatically reduce the time to create, control and release information to purchasing.
