Accordingly, consumption of dog food moved to smaller packages, which resulted in reduced frequency of purchases.

Competitive Landscape

Delayed in comparison with other developed markets, over the forecast period, the pet care competitive landscape is expected to see the rise of private label. In 2013, private label represented 27% of dog food value sales. Currently, Mercadona is the main competitor and smaller players such as the discounters, Dia and Lidl, are also fast growing. On the contrary, important grocery retailers such as Carrefour or Alcampo still offer limited portfolios which are likely to expand during the forecast period.
