Over the past quarter, there have been increasing signs that the worst may now be over for Egypt's beleaguered tourism sector, in line with BMI's long-held views on the subject. Indeed, the latest available data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) as this report was being compiled showed a 15.8% annual rise in the number of tourists visiting Egypt over July 2014, to 885,765.

Greater political stability following the election of Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi as President in May is heralding a recovery in tourism arrivals, with local newspaper Al-Ahram estimating that 997,500 visitors arrived in August, which would represent a 15-month high if confirmed in the final data.
Year-to-date, a total of 5,313,338 tourists have visited Egypt. On current trends, this would suggest a final-year outcome in the order of 9.1mn tourists. As such, BMI is happy to revise up its forecasts for 2014 arrivals this quarter, from a 15% annual decline, to a 4% annual decline. One further potential downside risk to tourism inflows stems from the parliamentary elections due to take place in November or December. However, should these pass without significant incident, then we would expect additional reductions in political risks and thus a further normalisation of tourist numbers heading into 2015. For now, we are estimating a 3% growth in tourist arrival numbers in 2015, but this may well be revised upwards.
