Metro Tech's MetroCare Hospital Day Gives Students More Hands-on Experience

Oklahoma City, OK -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/22/2016 -- MetroCare Hospital Day was created eight years ago with the goal of providing students with more hands-on experience. Since then this program has been revised to include a number of different career programs and community partners. In the past HCC students could only set up a mock hospital to pretend treating fellow students and staff members with simulated injuries. Last year, however, HCC Lab Simulation Coordinator Josie Scott decided to improve upon this program for a more realistic learning experience that would benefit students greatly.

A mass casualty component was introduced to this program so as to include numerous career programs along with outside partners. There was a simulated bus crash involving students from Metro Tech's sending high schools. Because these students were not yet enrolled at Metro Tech, it effectively served as a unique recruitment tool as well.

Historically, the "victims" in these mock treatment sessions have simply been people coming into the make-shift emergency room. In 2016, Metro Tech treated students who were "victims" in a mock school shooting. This allowed students from a number of different programs to participate and gain experience for their future careers.

For the mock school shooting, the Oklahoma City Fire Department and Shawnee Count and City Police Departments were the first responders, accompanied by Metro Tech Law Enforcement Services students. Students observed the process of clearing the building as well as crowd control, which are two things they also learn in the classroom.

All of the "victims" each wore tags identifying their respective injuries and were transported to the mock hospital at HCC by OSU-OKC Paramedic Program students. These victims were then admitted and treated according to the severity of their injuries.

Students of from Information Technology Center (ITC) Medical Office Program, Practical Nursing Program, and Medical Assisting Program were responsible for treating the patients. This expansion to the previously existing training program was designed to give students in a number of different programs a more hands-on experience to prepare them for their future careers. Students of law enforcement, fire rescue, and medical programs have all participated in these mock emergency situations organized by the school along with outside partners. This program has gained quite a bit of attention for its uniquely hands-on approach to training and educating students.
