More People Choose Glucosamine as an Alternative to NSAIDs

Portland, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/18/2014 -- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are typically prescribed for many types of arthritis pain and an array of conditions and diseases with inflammatory responses. People are turning in record numbers to glucosamine supplements instead of NSAIDs to avoid the adverse effects.

“Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance that’s produced within the body,” said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan. “It functions as a natural anti-inflammatory and is essential for the creation and maintenance of cartilage required for joint health.”
NSAIDs have been the drug of choice for decades to relieve inflammation, swelling and pain from a wide variety of sources. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued new regulations warning medical providers of the potential dangers associated with NSAIDs and requiring prescription inserts proclaiming the same information for patients.

A variety of dangerous and even deadly side effects have been connected to NSAID usage. The medications can cause stomach bleeding, liver damage, water retention, and kidney failure. A study published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences showed that NSAIDs also inhibits bile production from the gallbladder.

Glucosamine is necessary for the creation and maintenance of cartilage. It has also been shown to be a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals that damage cells. Results from a12-week research project published in The Scientific World Journal concluded that glucosamine could slow the progression of cartilage breakdown, and a Temple University study indicated that glucosamine actually had the ability to help the body repair cartilage damage.

NSAIDs are most commonly prescribed for inflammation and pain associated with arthritis and joint dysfunction. Arthritis worsens over time, requiring ever increasing dosages of pain relievers. A New England Journal of Medicine article stated that NSAIDs are effective for short-term usage, but shouldn’t be used for extended duration.

Multiple research studies with glucosamine dietary supplements have demonstrated that they’re as effective as many of the most common prescription pain relievers and over-the-counter remedies. NSAIDs only address the symptoms of joint pain and clinical research has shown they accelerate damage and inhibit the production of chondroitin, another natural chemical the body produces to build and maintain cartilage.

To obtain the maximum results from a glucosamine supplement, medical professionals recommend a daily dosage of 1,500mg and advise selecting a supplement that includes chondroitin in the formula. Both are naturally manufactured chemicals in the body and enhance the efficacy of one another when used in combination
