Hackensack, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/20/2014 -- For the first time, the Multiple Sclerosis Nurses Certification Exam (MSCN) will be given on the opening day of the 2014 Cooperative Meeting of CMSC (Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers) & ACTRIMS® (American Committees for the Treatment and Research of Multiple Sclerosis).
Taking place on May 28th at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX, nurses from all over the world will have the opportunity to take this 2-hour examination and be acknowledged for knowledge in providing care to MS patients. This voluntary certification is developed by the Multiple Sclerosis Nursing International Credentialing Board in collaboration with Professional Testing Company of New York City. It is endorsed by the International Organization of Multiple Sclerosis Nurses (IOMSN) the first and only worldwide organization focused solely on the needs and goals of professional nurses.
“Multiple sclerosis is a dynamic chronic illness and to provide high quality care requires a unique level of knowledge. This certification program helps people with MS and their families know that they are receiving optimal care from their nurse,” said June Halper, Executive Director of IOMSN & Chief Executive Officer of CMSC.
Since 2002, more than 1200 nurses from around the world have received the MS International Nurses Certification. It is recommended that a nurse have at least two years experience in multiple sclerosis nursing before sitting for the examination.
The examination covers the basic concepts of MS including disease course classification, neuroanatomy, pathophysiology of MS, current diagnostic processes and tools for assessment. Nurses will be questioned about their knowledge of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment, symptom management and psychosocial issues and interventions. Research, patient and family education as well as patient advocacy issues are included in this comprehensive examination.
