Blackpool, Lancashire -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/04/2016 -- In recent weeks there has been increased focus on the efficient use of packaging and cutting down waste, especially in light of the climate change talks in Paris towards the end of 2015. In 2016 sustainability is set to be a big focus particularly regarding plastic packaging – and developments are already being made within this. A new range of sortable colourants for plastic have been produced, patent pending, designed to help recover certain plastics from the waste process. This emphasizes that the sustainable use of plastics is at the forefront of attention going into 2016.
The proposed use of sortable colourants in plastics is a significant step, as shows moves to increase the efficiency of recycling by addressing the waste process directly. Co-ordinating plastics to these colours will allow recycling technology to determine what is recyclable and what is not. Currently, machines differentiate plastics passing through waste facilities by their polymer type, but by applying colourants to certain plastics which are perhaps harder to identify, this could co-ordinate even better to the machines. This may help to ensure that the recycling process remains free from contamination, as well ensuring that as many plastic products as possible suitable for recycling go through the process.
A number of businesses use plastic packaging and thus are expected to be under increasing pressure to streamline it and reduce wastage where possible. One popular method, also set to be big in 2016, is shrink wrap. This is the use of a plastic polymer film which is tightly applied to products using heat: therefore cutting down on excesses.
