The major trend in the category during the year was the major shift towards products which represent the latest innovations in consumer appliances and the latest technology in consumer electronics. At the same time, the unit prices charged for consumer electronics and consumer appliances in Russia are consistently decreasing as the supply of these products continues to increase. Russians are generally unwilling to pay more than what they perceive as acceptable for products with regular and common functions and features. The most visible effect of this was seen in the retailing of mobile phones, where demand for feature phones has plummeted amidst a very strong increase in demand for smartphones. In televisions, meanwhile, the prevailing trends in 2013 were for smart TVs with internet connections and 3D functions, while in digital cameras rising sales of SLR cameras and compact system cameras was evident. All of these trends combined to boost value growth in electronics and appliance specialist retailers in 2013, with current value sales rising by 12%.
