Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/17/2014 -- Sales of sun care products surged by 5% in 2013 to stand at ?28 million. 2013 was an exceptionally good year for sun care, as consumers basked in sunshine for a prolonged period of the summer. Consumers increased their spending on sun protection in particular, as they are more aware of the harmful effects of the sun on their skin. Self-tanning also saw growth as it remains an essential aspect of many consumers? beauty regime.
There was little movement within sun care value sales in 2013. Company sales were led by L? Or?al (UK) Ltd, which continued to dominate with 44% of sales thanks to its leading Garnier brand. The company continues to hold over half of sales within sun protection, and is also the leading brand owner within aftersun with a 32% value share. The better Irish summer really benefited the Garnier Ambre Solaire brand. Consumers tend to buy brands which they recognise within this category as they want effective products.

Sun care is predicted to see very marginal growth over the forecast period with value sales remaining slightly higher than in 2013, at ?28 million. It is impossible to predict exactly what local weather will be like over the forecast period. However, given that 2013 was the best Irish summer for several years, it is likely it will be some time before a similar summer is experienced. One compensating factor for category sales will be as consumers? disposable incomes increase again they will be more likely to go on foreign holidays, and in turn their spending on sun care products will also increase.
