With the advent of time, traditional therapies are replaced by novel oral anticoagulants, which have better safety and efficacy profiles.

The 1990s saw rapid development in the field of direct thrombin inhibitors. Though these drugs, such as hirudin, have been in use from the early 19th century, they were accepted with the development of genetic engineering technology. The recombinant forms, such as desirudin, are also available in the market.
