Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/27/2014 -- Excluding the small RTD tea category, still bottled water was the most dynamic soft drink during the review period, owing to the hot summer seasons. Turkey now has one of the highest per capita rates in Western Europe at 146 litres. Although PET bottles accounted for over 95% of total still bottled water packaging, the exclusive market niche of mineral waters in glass bottles is a growing trend in Turkey. Kestane Su and Reina Su launched glass bottles in 2011, and Pinar, Sirma and Damla followed suit in 2012. Glass bottles tend to be used in bars, restaurants and other foodservice channels rather than in retail due to the strong demand among consumers due to the perceived elegance and quality of the products.

Industry Prospects

Still bottled water is expected to be the most dynamic category in soft drinks over the forecast period owing to health and wellbeing consumer trends in Turkey. SUDER (Turkish Bottled Water Association) and expansion of the government health programmes have promoted bottled water as a healthier alternative to other types of soft drinks. In 2012, bottled water consumption reached 10.3 billion litres. As PET bottles account for over 95% of total still bottled water packaging in Turkey, this is expected to benefit PET bottles, as this type of packaging is very convenient, especially small-size formats such as 330ml PET bottles.
