Small, independent retailers are still prevalent in the Chinese countryside, but malls and department stores are now the preferred shopping venues for an increasingly urban population - forecast to reach almost 59% of the total by 2018.

A major trend is the growth in online purchasing, with China registering an increase in online retail sales of 33.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) to CNY1.1trn (USD176.1bn) in H114, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). Alibaba's Tmall platform now lists more than 100,000 brands, including 2,000 from outside China and industry estimates put China's online apparel sales at USD100bn in 2014, a 40% rise on 2013 levels. We forecast spending on clothing & footwear to increase from USD564bn in 2015 to USD778bn in 2018, a rise of 11.3% a year on average.
