Valencia, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/24/2014 -- Predictions regarding dental health have traditionally revolved around many different factors and often delivered very predictable and consistent results.  One area that has not received much attention, until recently, is the impact of economic conditions on oral health of individuals in the same age group. This week, the Journal of Dental Research has attempted to shine light in this area with the publication of the results of research exactly in this area from the very well regarded institutions Newcastle University, UCL, the National Centre for Social Research, the NHS Foundation and Newcastle upon Tyne.  The results were remarkable, but not surprising to experts.

“It’s probably not a big surprise that poorer people have worse dental health than the richest,” commented Professor Jimmy Steele, of Newcastle University.  “But the surprise is just how big the differences can be and how it affects people.”

According to the research, the dental health of the bottom 20% of British society, was significantly worse than the more economically advantaged at the top of society.  This breaks down to, on average, a full 8 less teeth by the time a poor person is in their 70's compared to the wealthy.  These differences can, according to the study, can be seen in all areas of oral health with gum disease, tooth decay and other serious issues also being more prevalent in the poor.  Less obvious were the outright causes for these differences, that Professor Steele and other experts, suggest may not be as simple as lack of comparable levels of oral treatment over the years.

Some good news was suggested, in that overall dental health has improved across economic divisions across all of Great Britain in recent years.
