Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/18/2014 -- Thanks to widespread information on media channels regarding skin damage by the sun or a polluted environment, consumers became more concerned with skin protection. This helped drive demand for sun care products, especially during the summer when the weather is hot and sunny and people visit the beach a lot. Sun care products were primarily popular to consumers living in urban areas who were more informed about sun care, and more inclined to use sun care products. Consumers in rural areas were less concerned with sun care.
Competitive Landscape
Beiersdorf remained the leader in sun care with a value share of 41% in 2013. Beiersdorf?s success was attributed to the established image of the Nivea brand in beauty and personal care. Moreover, the Nivea brand was one of the first sun care brands to be introduced to the mass market. Hence, Nivea quickly gained popularity thanks to its high quality and reasonable pricing. In general, the brand is perceived as offering sun protection as well as skin care functionality. Strong marketing activities, a diverse product portfolio and extensive distribution network were other factors contributing to the leading position of Beiersdorf in sun care.

Industry Prospects
In response to rising demand for sun care products, it is expected that players and retailers will introduce many new brands and products in coming years. Towards the end of the review period manufacturers of sun protection products tended to focus on SPF as their selling point, as consumers perceive sun protection as the main function of such products. However, products which offer only SPF protection are unlikely to be able to compete with alternative brands that offer additional benefits, such as facial moisturisers with SPF or BB cream. Hence, manufacturers are likely to offer sun protection for different parts of the body or which offer innovative application methods.
