Photographer and Visual Artist Lucy Ridges Brings Icelandic Inspiration Back to Her Hometown of Manchester

Manchester, UK -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/15/2015 -- Lucy Ridges is a photographer and an artist based in Manchester who specialises in fine art images that tell stories and take their viewers on a journey. After spending a month in Skagastrond, Iceland with 11 other artists as part of the NES Artist residency she has been on a journey of discovery herself, returning to the UK to infuse her private and commercial shoots with the techniques this inspiring island has shown her.

Having trained in portrait photography Lucy Ridges' style is elegant and iconic. Often using black and white imagery her photographic prints are both stunning private commissions and gallery worthy works in their own right. Her images have most recently appeared on the cover of Configo Magazine, in New Scientist and she has worked for The Skinny (NorthWest), Geist Magazine, Cornerhouse, Hazel Bee, ABF Pictures, The British Heart Foundation and appeared at The Guardian's London Gallery.

Using analogue cameras alongside digital techniques her work takes a lot of influence from surrealism and often offers a vintage yet fresh feel to its viewers. Appealing to a broad range of people Lucy has captured bespoke pregnancy photography as well as taking commissions from musicians, artists and collectives such as Working for a Nuclear Free City, BC Camplight, East India Youth, Bird, Stefan Melbourne and Turner Prize nominee David Shrigley. Lucy's photography is unique because of its playful yet classic style. It's rare to find a photographer capable of combining in-depth technical know-how with the imaginative flair of a constantly evolving artist.

During her time in Iceland Lucy was challenged to find new ways of capturing her subjects and the unfamiliar scenery of an elemental landscape in inventive ways with minimal resources. Meeting other artists from all over the world and exchanging ideas was a crucial part of her process. The purposeful stripping back of supplies and studio space in an isolated location pushed her work in unexpected and exciting directions. During her month in Skagastrond Lucy focused on experimenting with production techniques she had never used before such as collage and hand colouring her photographs. These creative investigations have ultimately enriched the depth of Lucy's work and enabled a huge leap forward in the way she approaches every shoot.

Lucy blogged, "I have no idea what twists and turns my work is going to take out here. That was a big part of why I chose this place. I wanted to face challenges. There's no photo studio, no film developing lab, no negative scanner, no models, no make up artists, stylists, no props and no daylight. It's like Challenge Anneka."

Lucy's time on this testing island was both trying and invigorating and she has now returned to Manchester bursting with ideas and inspiration. The incredible results of this challenge that she morethan overcame can be seen on her website. There you will also find an extensive portfolio of her portraiture and other photographic work. Lucy's fine art prints are available to buy via her online shop and she is currently offering a 15% discount to all her clients.
