Pothole Problems: Councils Receive Claims for Compensation

Doncaster, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/20/2015 -- Approaching winter the roads can quickly become dangerous for motorists and cyclists alike. Deterioration of roads across the UK account for a considerable amount of accidents on council owned land.

According to potholes.co.uk authorities currently pay out more than £30 million in compensation due to poor road conditions. In recent figures released by First4lawyers, Manchester was ranked second on a list of UK cities with the highest number of accident claims filed against local councils.

Manchester City Council received 3,524 complaints about potholes in the year 2013/14. The combined figures for Councils across the UK are astounding.

Fillthathole.co.uk is a website set up by CTC (the national cycling charity) which offers an easy way to report potholes in your local area. With communities taking action and councils being notified, the risk from potholes can be reduced. Cyclists especially are affected by potholes, and are usually the first to spot them.

Recently 48-year-old Chris Clay told the Derby Telegraph "I was cycling, then all of a sudden, I went flying." He had no idea what caused his accident but was left with pain more than just minor injuries. Like many, Clay has a financial right to seek damages as the accident wasn't his fault. However with Fillthathole.co.uk in operation all year round, it is accidents like these that can be avoided as councils are notified by the charity and are usually quick to act.

If you have ever had an accident because of the poor conditions of roads in your area, The Accident Team can offer a free consultation with a no win, no fee, no risk guarantee. Under the Highways Act 1980, it is possible to pursue a successful claim.

A spokesperson for the team said: "At this time of year more and more people do seek legal advice regarding claims for accidents resulting from potholes and general deterioration of road surfaces. Accident compensation claims caused by negligent councils are something we can help with. Local authorities have an obligation to ensure roads are maintained to a satisfactory standard; where this obligation has not been met, we can look at the options to pursue a claim."
