Problem Gambling Drama from CCGNJ Wins Prestigious Communicator Award of Excellence

Hamilton, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 05/25/2016 -- The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) is proud to announce that "Break Even," a short drama created for the CCGNJ by OutreachArts, recently won a prestigious Communicator Award of Excellence at the 22nd Annual Communicator Awards. Submitted among more than 6,000 entries, "Break Even" was honored for its creative achievement and striking depiction of disordered gambling.

"Break Even" is a family drama that honestly and poignantly portrays online gambling addiction. Unbeknownst to each other, two members of the same family struggle with their inability to stay away from online gambling. The film depicts Liz, a college-aged woman, and Marty, her middle-aged uncle, as they deal with the problems that face so many disordered gamblers. Both Liz and Marty continue to gamble in the pursuit of breaking even against their losses, which leads to a downward spiral of withdrawing from life, deceiving their families, and feeling hopeless. Both characters find themselves unable to quit gambling, even when they want to. While "Break Even" evokes the potentially tragic consequences of an unaddressed gambling problem, it also depicts the resources for gambling problem help in New Jersey that are available to struggling problem gamblers.

The CCGNJ is one of those resources. The Council's 24/7, confidential hotline, 1-800-GAMBLER, is a round-the-clock lifeline to the support, treatment, and hope that disordered gamblers and their loved ones need. Those who suspect that they or a loved one have a gambling problem can call or text the hotline at any time to speak with a representative immediately. They will be put in touch with resources for help with gambling addiction in NJ, such as Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon meetings, inpatient treatment facilities, and counseling that will set them on the path to recovery. The Council's website, http://www.800gambler.org, also hosts multiple resources for learning about disordered gambling and treatment options.
