Flushing, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/15/2014 -- Dr. Shilpa Trivedi, a veteran Queens NY dentist and owner of Preferred Dental Care offices , has joined the war against poverty and illiteracy in the U.S.
“According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, over 16 million children in the United States live below the federal poverty level,” said Dr. Trivedi.
“These kids are our future. When it comes to illiteracy and poverty affecting our country’s kids, this really is a war that I and my entire dental office are willing to fight. We need to stand up and be counted.”
Dr. Trivedi was awarded the Recognition of Duty badge by U.S. Marines at a recent event in St. Petersburg, Florida for her generous support of Toys for Tots and the Children Literacy Program. During the event presentation, Captain Joseph Draeger of the U.S. Marines said, “Through the gift of a book we can provide the tools needed to help break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.” The event raised enough money to help over ten thousand disadvantaged families in the United States.
In addition to the familiar “Toys for Tots” gift collection boxes, which started in 1947, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program was launched in 2008 with the mission to offer the nation’s most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and succeed in life. Major companies such as The UPS Store, FAO Schwartz, Hasbro, Toys R Us, The Walt Disney Company and many more all joined the fight in supporting the Toys for Tots Literacy Campaign.
