Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/04/2014 -- Following a successful 2012, gardening in Germany posted a strong decline in 2013, mainly due to bad weather. A long winter and short summer impacted gardening activities, showing that the weather remains a decisive factor for the gardening industry in Germany. Accordingly, gardening in Germany declined further in value sales. However, generally, people in Germany love their gardens and balconies and are very active gardeners. In this regard, despite a strong category decline in 2013, there were still many new innovations in the marketplace.
Gardening in Germany remained a very fragmented category in 2013, featuring a variety of small and medium-sized local businesses but also some major national and international players. Gardena Deutschland GmbH, which is part of the international Husqvarna Group, continued to lead gardening, but with only a value share of 3%. The company?s sales fell by 5% in 2013, mainly due to the decline of watering products, although the company was partly able to offset this through positive growth in other categories. Of particular note is Gardena?s robotic lawn mower R40Li, with which the company was able to generate a strong turnover.

In 2014 and beyond, the general enthusiasm of consumers for their own garden or balcony is expected to continue. In particular, urban landscaping will become a major trend in gardening along with the cultivation of one?s own vegetables or herbs. Furthermore, demographic change will be a further influence on the future development of the gardening industry in Germany. There will be a greater emphasis on ergonomically-designed products over the forecast period. Lighter packaging will benefit an ageing generation of hobby gardeners. Battery technology and automatic watering systems will likewise become more and more popular. In this regard, more convenient products are expected to be launched as they will aid both older and younger gardeners who increasingly have less time to take care of their gardens.
