Mr. Cooperman, the founder of Omega Advisors, told CNBC host David Faber on Thursday that high frequency trading, where computer systems are programmed to buy and sell securities in seconds, have created the volatility affecting the stock market. "There is no economic reason for a stock market to go up and down 5% in a day … that’s all because of high frequency trading," said Copperman on the day that the Dow went down almost 420 points.

According to Wikipedia, Mr. Cooperman was born to a plumber who worked in the South Bronx. He attended Hunter College. After graduating, Cooperman become a Xerox quality control engineer in 1965. He then obtained an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. The day after graduating, Cooperman joined Goldman Sachs in the company's asset management arm, conducting investment research. He worked at Goldman Sachs for twenty five years, becoming a general partner and Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. In 1991, Cooperman left the firm and founded Omega Advisors.
