The annual Automotive Performance and Layout Study (APEAL) is a survey done by J.D. Power and Associates to evaluate the satisfaction level of new car buyers. The study examines how rewarding a new car is to both drive and own. The APEAL study measures owner’s satisfaction in 10 categories including Fuel Economy, Audio/Entertainment/Navigation, Vehicle Interior, Seats, Engine, HVAC, Storage, Visibility, Driving Experience and Vehicle Exterior.

Completely new for 2011, the BMW 5 Series earned the top position for midsize premium cars. The 2011 5 Series earned the top ranking of “among the best” in all five categories; Overall Performance and Design, Performance, Comfort, Features and Instrument Panel, and Style. Attributing to the win were the 5 Series powerful engine choices including a normally aspirated and turbocharged inline-6, as well as a twin-turbo V8.

Winning the premium crossover SUV category was the BMW X3. The second-generation model is slightly taller, longer and wider than its predecessor. The new design led to the 2011 X3 earning a top rating of “among the best” in all five award categories.

Finally, the 2011 BMW Z4 was awarded the top spot in the compact premium sports car category. The Z4’s V6 engine and manual, automatic or SMG transmission gave this vehicle a top ranking of “among the best” in overall performance and design. The BMW Z4 is the first roadster with a retractable hardtop, leading to an “among the best” rating in Style and Performance.

Other BMW vehicles also received top honors in the APEAL studying including the 7 Series coming in second in its segment with the second-highest individual score of all the vehicles in the study. The BMW 3 Series and the BMW X6 models also finished as runners-up in their respective segments.
