Common Sense Parenting: Boys Town Advice for All Parents

Parent Choices For Struggling Teens talk show has guest Ron Thompson from Boys Town, explain the research Boys Town has been doing for more than 22 years on at-risk children and the resulting program they provide parents groups on what they refer to as Common Sense Parenting.

Bonners Ferry, ID -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/13/2011 -- "Common Sense Parenting is the result of more than 22 years of research in studying what works with at-risk children," Ron Thompson, Director of Boys Town Research Institute, explained on Lon Woodbury's Internet Talk Radio Show "Parent Choices for Struggling Teens" on October 3, 2011 on http://www.latalkradio.com/.

"Through our own research and formal collaboration with the University of Nebraska, University of Washington and Ohio State University and several other research centers," Thompson pointed out, "we have evidence of what works best in working with children with problems and enabled us to provide practical parenting advice training to about a thousand parents a year throughout the country."

"Three of the main principles we find are necessary for successful parenting are setting up clear expectation, provide positive learning experiences from predictable consequences, and how vital it is for parents to remain calm," said Thompson, "which helps parents focus on figuring out ways to make it easy for the children to be successful by making the experience a positive learning experience for the child."

"Punishment is a good way to teach negative reactions and to undermine what parents hope to do," concluded Thompson, "and extensive follow-up studies have shown that by following the principles identified in our Common Sense Parenting program, adults can help children learn to make good choices."
