According to a recent article by the Financial Times’ Philip Stafford, speeds for conducting trades between London and Hong Kong are set to drop dramatically as the fierce competition to trade at high-speed across continents spurs improvements in telecom cables.

BSO Network Solutions, a UK-based trading technology company, said on Friday it had cut latency – the time it takes for trade to be done – in a round trip between the two financial hubs to 176 milliseconds, or thousandths of a second. The record meant it had cut more than 20 milliseconds from its previous best in the last 12 months.

Fibre-optic cables, ideal for high-speed trading, are being laid thousands of miles across oceans and land masses.

In April GlobeNet, a submarine cable provider, said it had cut the New York-Sao Paulo route to an average round trip latency of 110 milliseconds, while rival Hibernia Atlantic is laying a new cable across the Atlantic which will chop 6 milliseconds off trading times.

Trading technology providers say the demand comes from investors wanting to exploit differences in asset prices in markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas and the effect has been estimated to be worth up to $100m in profits for some investors.
