In recent news concerning the industry, a meeting of regulators from around the world hosted by the Financial Services Authority and Securities Exchange Commission has advanced plans for more coordinated monitoring of high frequency trading.

As seen on highfrequencytraders.com, the roundtable meeting in London was attended by representatives of 16 regulatory bodies from Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. It focused on a number of market structure issues, specifically automated trading strategies such as high frequency trading, market fragmentation and ‘dark pools’ of undisclosed liquidity. Also under discussion were appropriate approaches regulators might adopt in the light of these market structure developments.

According to the FSA’s Martin Wheatley: "The meeting provided an opportunity for regulators from around the globe to discuss vital markets structure issues, particularly the impact and role of high frequency trading. The meeting allowed for the sharing of useful information between the regulators and will contribute to a sound basis for continued work to be done at a global level.”

The meeting comes at a time when HFT is under growing scrutiny. US regulators have been putting high frequency trading firms under pressure to divulge sensitive information on trading strategies. Unsurprisingly, this has been met with resistance from the industry, who are extremely reluctant to expose the secrets that keep them competitive.
