According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal’s Neil Shah, banks like Credit Suisse Group AG and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, as well as a growing number of hedge funds, are handing over management of their currency options risks to computers. In doing so, they're automating a process that traders say takes up anywhere from 25% to 50% of their time.
High-frequency trading already accounts for up to 30% of activity in the global foreign exchange market, mostly in heavily traded currencies like the euro and dollar, according to Aite Group, a consulting firm. Its use is widespread in equities and commodities trading as well. Now, banks and hedge funds are making a push into more niche areas, including exchange-rate derivatives and more thinly emerging market currencies.
"You can automate something where you used to have to be glued to a screen," said Paul Buckley, head of Credit Suisse's Advanced Execution Services foreign-exchange products globally. Credit Suisse charges clients based on usage of their system, called AES FX. The bank's own traders also use the system to manage options risks.
