U.S., U.K. Regulators to Weigh High-Frequency Registration

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/28/2011 -- According to the Wall Street Journal, top market regulators of the U.S. and the U.K. this week will discuss the idea of formally registering high-speed electronic trading firms, the chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said Tuesday. This topic will also be discussed further by Edgar Perez, author of The Speed Traders, An Insider's Look at the New High-Frequency Trading Phenomenon That is Transforming the Investing World (http://www.thespeedtraders.com), at The Speed Traders Workshop 2011, "The Present and Future of High-Frequency Trading" (http://www.thespeedtradersworkshop.com), in Singapore, Hong Kong and Sao Paulo. The Speed Traders Workshop 2011 will be extremely helpful for all delegates who are working in finance and investments, from financial institutions, investment banks, hedge funds, pension funds, broker dealers, consultancy groups, prime brokers, solution providers and exchanges, who wish to gain a thorough understanding and practical knowledge of high-frequency trading.

So-called high-frequency trading—a method of rapidly buying and selling securities—has come under scrutiny in recent years as slower-moving investors have raised concerns around being outpaced, and financial markets have increasingly come to rely on the liquidity offered by such firms.

Regulators have sought to better understand high-frequency trading strategies, but some like the CFTC's Mr. Chilton have raised concerns that regulators' reach isn't far enough to cover firms that wield trading algorithms with the potential to disrupt markets if they aren't used properly. Exchange executives, speaking at an event hosted by the Futures Industry Association on Tuesday, said that high-frequency trading needs to be better understood by both lawmakers and the general public. Garry Jones, global head of derivatives for NYSE Euronext, said he has had to correct misunderstandings of the business by members of the European Parliament.

The Speed Traders Workshop 2011, led by Edgar Perez, author of The Speed Traders, will reveal how high-frequency trading players are succeeding in the global markets and driving the development of algorithmic trading at breakneck speeds from the U.S. and Europe to India, Singapore and Brazil. Highlights of The Speed Traders Workshop 2011 include:
