This year’s Explorer offers refined driving, thanks to the automaker replacing the previous truck-based body-on-frame with a carlike unibody chassis in 2011. New for 2012 is an optional turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which offers the power of a six-cylinder with the fuel economy of the four. This new engine gives the 2012 best in class fuel economy at 20 MPG city/28 MPG highway. The standard engine on the Explorer is a 3.5-liter V6, which produces 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. Although front-wheel drive comes standard, four wheel drive is optional, and includes Ford’s Terrain Management System, hill descent control, and hill start assist.
