Humbug Fraud Prevention Processes over 100,000,000 Calls

Tinton Falls, NJ -- (SBWIRE) --11/18/2011 -- Humbug Telecom Labs provider of carrier-class fraud prevention, detection and telecom analytics for any size business; today announced it has processed over one hundred million (100,000,000) CDRs (Call Detail Records).

According to the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA), telecom fraud as a result of hacking and PBX hijacking costs businesses $80 billion each year.

“Telecom Fraud gets more sophisticated every day,” says Eric Klein, VP sales and marketing at Humbug Telecom Labs. “The biggest external threat to companies is the lack of discussion about attacks. Fraudsters know that they can hit company after company and since no one talks about it, the same attacks work time and again. Humbug enables companies to break free of the cycle of fraud.”

In the past, telecom fraud only affected telephone companies and large enterprises, but Humbug’s research indicates a much larger impact on smaller companies. Klein added. “This is what inspired Humbug to create a service that makes telecom fraud detection accessible and affordable for everyone.”

During the Security Round Tables at AstriCon audience members spoke about their fraud experiences. One person explained how his company was defrauded of "$400,000 in 2 days" (video). Another told how one of his customers set their PBX password to the default setting and "was hacked in under 11 minutes after being connected to the internet."

Humbug is protecting more than 6,000 phone systems with a confirmed black list of over 70,000 know fraudulent numbers and types. Since January 1st, Humbug has issued more than 50,000 alerts, of which more than 10,000 were from the black list of known fraudulent numbers.

It is important to note, that less than 30% of the black listed alerts were generated by hacking attempts. This shows that the biggest risk to companies is not outside attackers but internal threats and there are methods that can be taken to reduce this risk.

To learn how to protect your company, Humbug Telecom Labs has published a white paper about the Benefits of Telecom Analytics and Fraud Detection for Enterprises you can download this free white paper at http://www.humbuglabs.org/index.php/telecom/enterprise.
