While front-wheel drive is standard on the 2012 Explorer, four wheel drive is optional on all models and includes hill descent control, hill start assist, and Ford’s Terrain Management System.

This more refined driving is a result of Ford replacing the previous truck-based body-on-frame with a carlike unibody chassis in the 2011 redesign.
