Bangalore, Karnataka -- (SBWIRE) --11/16/2011 -- A workshop on 'device and coil surgery' was held at LPS Institute of Cardiology, an associate institute of Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, on Saturday.
Specialists of 'Narayana Hrudayalaya' performed a live surgery to fill the holes in hearts without conducting a by-pass surgery. The gaps or holes in heart of four patients were filled. The students and faculty members of LPS Institute cardiology witnessed the live surgery on a screen through a projector. The experts shortlisted four patients.
Dr Sanjay Mehrotra and Dr BK Mahala of Narayana Hrudayalaya solved queries of the students and faculty members.
Dr Mehrotra said device and coil surgery is a method to fill the holes in heart without by-pass surgery. It is a scarless procedure to fix the holes in the heart known as membraneous ventricular septal defect (VSD). The device can be a 'amplatzer', a coil or even a balloon, which can be used to fill the holes.
In this new technique, only a small nick is made in the leg and the device or patch is pushed upto the heart and placed in the hole. The patient can be discharged the next day.
The LPS Institute of Cardiology is the only government hospital in the state after SGPGI and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, Lucknow, where this highly advanced technique for treating heart ailments was used.
