In order to be considered a Top Safety Pick a vehicle must receive a rating of “Good”, the institute’s highest rating, in all tests including frontal off-set crash, side impact, rear impact and roof crush. The vehicle must also have electronic stability control as standard equipment.

According to the IIHS in the frontal offset crash test, “Dummy movement was well controlled, and measures indicated a low risk of significant injuries in the event of a crash.” The findings from the side impact test were similar and once again indicated a “low risk” of injury.

Finally the IIHS performed a roof strength test, in which the X3 received a strength-to-weight ratio of 4.69. The roof test is a good indicator of a vehicle’s structural protection in rollover crashes, and a 4.69 out of 5 score for the BMW X3 was higher than most of its competitors.
