Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year that falls in mid April, is a week-long festival of merit- making, the gathering together of families and friends, and nationwide celebrations. Thais visit and pay respect to their elders, go to the temple to pray and give food to monks, and cleanse Buddha images using water mixed with Thai fragrances. Water becomes a symbol of cleansing and renewal and a central theme of Songkran. The act of water throwing that is synonymous with Songkran is traditionally a gentle pouring of water on the shoulder of elders, family and friends. While this version of water throwing is still practiced today, it has also transformed into full scale water battles where anybody and everybody is considered fair game for a drenching by water gun, hose or bucket.
