You can imagine owner Angi McElfresh’s shock to hear she had won the March award with only 1 entry – and it was hers!

“We have businesses who get thousands of votes entered in a month for this grant competition (Love a Local Business), we’ve only had this happen a couple times before where a business wins with only one entry.” stated Gretchen Harding, who manages the Intuit Small Business grant competition online. The award money will be awarded and presented to Ask a Nurse Now LLC the week of June 1st, 2010.

“When I received Gretchen’s call, I was in complete shock! But after calming down, I really felt that this confirmed to me, that Ask a Nurse Now is going to be a huge success and we are going to make a
difference in a lot of individuals life, when it comes to their health, medical needs and wellness.” stated Angi McElfresh, who is a Registered Nurse & the creator of www.AskaNurseNow.info, “My personal story and experiences have led me to this point. It’s what drove me to become a Nurse, and then work with those who lacked social support or the knowledge base to know where to turn. You would think living in America, this does not happen, but it does every day and it’s sad & angers me, no one should lack the support they need in our country.”

Her personal story includes the frustration & stress experienced when having her first child without any health insurance in the early 90's. During the pregnancy, suffering from complications, she had to figure out how to pay out of pocket for testing and prenatal care. After having emergency c-section, she had no assistance and struggled to pay astronomical medical bills, which left little to pay for formula and other vital baby items. After becoming a Nurse, she learned of local resources & Programs that could have provided her assistance. The lack of guidance or connection to these available resources left her struggling with why no one gave her this info and how this led to a tough road of preventable financial, medical and personal hardships.

“It is really a disgrace that here in America, individuals and families lack access and direction on what to do when it comes to their medical and health needs. No one plans to develop Cancer! This drove me to dedicate my career in helping others and ensure no one experiences what my family and I did!” Angi further comments, “I see it every day, especially in the elderly population, they are a silent group, not a lot of people can hear their needs. If you could only see what I have seen... it’d bring tears to your eyes!” Angi, who advanced her Nursing degree with a Business degree, soon found she held excellent entrepreneurial skills in business and a keen eye for new business development. Hence, Ask a Nurse Now LLC and it’s the dream of its future sister affiliate, a non-profit Organization called, The Ask a Nurse Now Foundation, who will assist individuals and their families who are unable to continue working after newly being diagnosed with a serious health problem and ensure they can remain in their home and have food on the table.
