Scott Wimmer Continues Streak Of Leading In Every Race

Altamonte Springs, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/20/2010 -- Scott Wimmer made a commitment to himself this season, run in equipment and with teams that he can show what he is truly capable of as a top flight driver in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and although he’s not competed in a full schedule, that goal is being achieved every time he steps behind the wheel in 2010. Again Wimmer did not disappoint his team, sponsors or the fans with his steady approach. One of the few drivers to have led a lap in 100% of his starts in 2010 was literally within minutes of his first win of the season at this past weekend’s Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

Starting the race 19th position, Wimmer felt what he thought was the right front tire going down just 12 laps into the race. This forced the #27 Red Man Moist Snuff Ford Fusion into pit lane under green flag conditions putting Wimmer down a lap very early on to take right side tires, and reentered the circuit scored in 41st position. The team knew they had a long road ahead to pull out a good finish in their sponsors’ final race, but felt fortunate it happened early enough to recover with good strategy and clean driving by Scott. Just nine laps later a caution came out which allowed the Baker Curb team to put on left side tires, make a trackbar adjustment and fuel Wimmers’ Ford Fusion.

The team continued to endure throughout as Scott steadily picked off the competition one at a time, with the team making necessary adjustments along the way to fight back from a lap down of the race leaders. The #27 entry was able to get that lap back on lap 112 when Wimmer was awarded the “Lucky Dog”, shortly thereafter only to come down pit road himself for tires, another round of adjustments and fuel to reenter the track now in 22nd position. Another caution came out just 22 laps later, and Crew Chief Rick Viers decided to take a gamble by leaving Wimmer on the track as the leaders pitted. The #27 Red Man Moist Snuff Ford Fusion was assumed the lead to take the green flag on lap 142 just one spot ahead of pole sitter Joey Lagano when another caution quickly presented itself.

Wimmer would lead eight laps, but running on older tires and much lower on fuel than the balance of the lead pack around him, the Baker Curb driver ran a steady pace to stay in the Top-5 and within sight of the leaders in order to take a shot at making it to the end. Fortune would strike as 30 of the final 85 laps were run under caution as six yellow flags came out enabling the fuel starved Ford Fusion to finish the race. Wimmer did what he could to hold off the competition to remain in the Top-5, but in the end with the car bobbling on fuel after an amazing 85 laps since his last pit stop, did fall back to seventh position in the end of what was no less than an amazing comeback.

After climbing out of the #27 Baker Curb Racing Ford Fusion a satisfied Wimmer exudes; “Red Man Moist Snuff has done a lot for the sport and this team, so I’m glad that we could deliver a Top-10 finish in their final race, we put ourselves in a little hole initially but Rick (Viers) did a great job with some strategy calls to get us back on the lead lap. We ended up leading some laps and almost had a Top-5, but we were on old tires and on the longer runs just couldn’t keep up and slipped a few spots. Baker Curb Racing builds really good cars and I’m thankful for the opportunity they gave me. We led laps and ran in the Top-10 in all three races I ran for them. Hopefully things work out that I get another chance to get back in their cars this season.”

On the season Wimmer has entered five races, led at least one lap in all five events, and has three Top-10 finishes to his credit. He is one of only a few drivers this season to have lead a lap in all races entered, and currently sits in 11th place in the series standings for leading the most laps although he’s missed nine of the 14 rounds to date. On top of having one of the best pass differentials and driver ratings this season, Wimmer is focused to keep up the momentum the balance of the season in similar fashion by making the very most of each and every opportunity he gets behind the wheel.
