Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/19/2010 -- California’s Bay Area, the hub of Silicon Valley, has lost over 10,000 jobs in June. This was the biggest job losses for the nine-county region since September 2009. The data is from California’s Employment Development Department.

Jeffrey Michael, director of the Stockton-based Business Forecasting Center has said that the reason for this is that the private sector is not hiring. The hardest hit county was the East Bay, which lost 3,800 jobs, primarily due to closing of the Fremont based NUMMI, a car plant that was jointly owned by General Motors and Toyota.

On the upside, Hound, a job search engine, reported that there were over 7,000 jobs in the two main Bay Area cities – San Jose and San Francisco. Hound CEO A. Harrison Barnes says. “There are even jobs in the tech sector. Not just in San Jose and San Francisco, but in other big towns like Fremont, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and Oakland.”

The major job openings in Bay Area this month were: information technology (3,055), engineering (2,838), sales (1,372), healthcare (1,100), and accounting (538).
