China Transformer Industry Report, 2009-2010

Beijing, China -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/05/2010 -- Transformer is a device that changes AC voltage on the principle of electromagnetic induction, and it can mainly be categorized into power transformer, instrument transformer and specialty transformer. A growing investment in China’s power grid construction in recent years has brought in ever-growing demand for power transformers. During 2006-2009, the transformer bid capacity had reached 782,818 MVA since the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) implemented centralized bid for power transmission and distribution equipment. Furthermore, the annual growth rate of transformer bid capacity of SGCC achieved 20% during the period of 2006-2008.

China’s transformer industry has increased rapidly in recent years due to growing demand, and by the year of 2009, the number of companies above designated size and total assets of the industry had respectively been up 76% and 146% compared to 2005. In the meantime, China’s transformer output also had achieved fast growth with expansion in industry scale, and annual growth rate of transformer output amounted to 21% during 2005-2009.

The industry expansion has further exacerbated the competition in China’s transformer market, especially the below-220KV transformer market that makes meager profit due to an excessive number of manufacturers. Now, foreign enterprises such as ABB and Toshiba, and leading domestic transformer companies like TBEA, Tianwei Baobian Electric and China XD Electric have significantly improved the concentration in the ultra-large EHV transformer market. In 2009, the market share of the top five companies that won transformer bid of SGCC reached 71%, and the three leading domestic companies also accounted for 56%.

In recent years, the market competitiveness of leading domestic transformer companies has increased rapidly due to improvements in various aspects like technology and cost. TBEA maintained the first place in China’s top ten transformer manufacturers in 2009, and topped the market segments like 220KV, 330KV, 500KV and 750KV in the SGCC transformer bid, with outstanding market competitive advantages.
