Pasadena, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/17/2010 -- The unemployment rate for New Jersey was 9.6 percent and the number of new jobless claims went up by 1,124. The data is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The worst hit city in New Jersey is Camden, already one of the poorest cities in the country. The city of 79,000 people has the lowest median household income in the US at $24, 283. The city has recently been in the news over the fact that facing a budget deficit it will be closing all of its public libraries and in the process eliminating 21 jobs. The city will also be cutting by over half the budgets of the police and fire departments.

Although, the Labor Department continues to predict a weak labor market in New Jersey, Hound, a job search engine has been able to add a total of over 10,000 jobs.

The site also found over 9,000 jobs in New York City and almost 3,000 jobs in Philadelphia. Overall has a list of over 655,000. “I know times are tough in Camden, but what we have found is that there are lots of service sector jobs in New Jersey and New York. People will have to be willing to shift or commute over considerable distances” says A. Harrison Barnes, CEO of Hound.
