Research Shows That Traditional Cloth Oven Mitts May Not Have the Highest Hygiene Standard

Mountain View, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/01/2014 -- Food Standards Agency (FSA), an independent government agency responsible for food safety and hygiene in the United Kingdom has released an online publication that puts traditional cloth oven mitts among the most risky items that can lead to food poisoning in the kitchen.

The publication that has been titled Kitchen Check explains that if left unwashed, damp and dirty, oven mitts make for one of the best places for bacteria to breed. The publication further advises that tea towels, dishcloths and oven mitts should be changed periodically to avoid cases of food poisoning.

Speaking in support of the publication, Researcher in Dulce Cocina, a leading supplier of silicone kitchen utensils has advised the use of the silicone oven gloves as alternatives to the cloth mitts.

"Although the silicone oven gloves cannot solely eliminate the dangers of food poisoning, they are at least a step in the right way," Mark Henderson, the media spokesperson for Dulce Cocina said.

Silicone Oven Mitts are a recent invention in the market that is more hygienic and safer to use than the traditional cloth mitts. Unlike the cloth mitts, the gloves are water and stain resistant and easier to clean (dishwasher safe).

However, cloth oven mitts and dish cloths are not the only food poisoning culprits identified in the FSA publication. In a survey conducted by the Food Standards Agency, it turns out that up to 80 percent of food handlers engaged in a few behaviors that put them at risk of food poisoning. The risky behaviors mentioned in the report include leaving dirty utensils near the food preparation area, not washing hands when preparing food or after handling raw food.

Consequently, the agency has come up with a tool to gauge how safe a person's food handling behaviors are. The tool, which comprises of a set of questions in each of the cooking stages, aims to give the respondents a score of how safe their food handling behaviors are and provide tips that can be used to improve safety and hygiene in the kitchen.
