More Studies Focus on Effects of Turmeric on Gallbladder Health

Portland, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/05/2014 -- While turmeric is best known as a great natural alternative for arthritis management, scientists are continually finding other health benefits associated with its use. This ancient spice has been used for thousands of years as a kitchen ingredient and a herbal medicine. Today, it is used for a variety of health problems including those that affect the gallbladder.

According to some studies, turmeric has therapeutic substances that can significantly help treat patients who have had gallbladder surgery. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric are believed to be among the major reasons why it is very beneficial to gallbladder health.

In a study, 50 patients took curcumin for 3 weeks after undergoing gallbladder surgery. Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric that is known to have quite a number of health benefits. Several other studies were also conducted during the span of 3 weeks. After 2 weeks, the patients reported a reduction in pain and fatigue while taking curcumin. After three weeks, they claimed that they were totally free of pain.

"Turmeric is also believed to be a great home remedy for gallbladder disorder when combined with other ingredients such as dandelion, artichoke, and rosemary essential oil. Among these natural products, it is turmeric that is believed to have the capacity to protect the gallbladder against oxidative stress," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Many people are already using turmeric for medicinal purposes. Some alternative medicine practitioners believe that turmeric is very beneficial to individuals with gallbladder problems. It is even believed that the low incidences of gallstone problems in India is due to the daily use of turmeric in traditional diets.

Another study was conducted to see the effects of curcumin in the reduction of cholesterol gallstones. The study used young male mice that were given curcumin for 10 weeks. It was found that the mice experienced a reduction in the production of gallstones compared to the mice that did not consume curcumin.

"One of the most interesting things about turmeric is that it is believed to be helpful in preventing gallstone formation. If this can be proven, it will have a dramatic impact on how we maintain gallbladder health in the future," added O'Sullivan.

Turmeric is widely available today not just in a powder form but also through curcumin supplements. Many of the best herbal companies companies use a combination of curcumin and BioPerine because it is more efficient. BioPerine is black pepper extract that can increase nutrient absorption in the body.
