Dr. Lambert Describes Treatment for Emergency Dentistry

Bethlehem, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/12/2014 -- Although brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups usually keep teeth healthy and sound, dental emergencies occur when least expected. Dr. Thomas Lambert of Always About Smiles in Bethlehem, PA has many ways of working around these emergencies.

Toothaches are among the most common dental emergencies. They can be caused by several factors, including a dying nerve within the tooth. Without treatment, the pain can intensify. Another typical dental emergency is a broken tooth, which can also lead to serious problems if left untreated, as the tooth becomes more sensitive to air and cold or hot foods.

If a tooth has been knocked out, Dr. Lambert advises, "Place the tooth in milk or between the cheek and gum, and do not try to clean it. See me immediately." The quicker the response, the more likely the tooth can be saved.

Crowns and bridges have been known to fall out. If this happens, either see Dr. Lambert as soon as possible to have them cemented back in place, or use a denture adhesive (such as Fixodent®) that can be purchased over-the-counter at most drugstores.

"If a denture or partial denture breaks, do not try to fix it with Crazy Glue® as that can make it impossible to repair," Dr. Lambert cautions, "Instead, bring it in so I can repair it properly."

Do not delay if a dental emergency befalls someone in the family. Waiting can cause bigger problems, which require more complex, costly and time-consuming dental work to be done. It can also be the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Dr. Lambert explains, "A good rule of thumb: if it hurts, call us." If an emergency happens after office hours, a call to Dr. Lambert's office will put you in touch with him so you can explain the problem and make arrangements for prompt, pain-relieving or tooth-saving treatment. Cosmetic emergencies should and will be seen immediately. There is no need for social embarrassment if a front tooth is lost or broken.
