Portland, OR -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/06/2015 -- Turmeric is a very popular spice used as a natural alternative among individuals who are suffering from arthritis. Research now shows that the spice may have therapeutic benefits that also extend to patients who have gallbladder problems.
According to studies, turmeric may potentially be beneficial for individuals who have just had gallbladder surgery. It is believed that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the spice are responsible for these therapeutic benefits.
"In India, curcumin is used as a natural medicine for fatigue and pain. Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric that is believed to have most of the powerful therapeutic benefits of the spice," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
One study was conducted at the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College to validate the therapeutic benefits of turmeric. It involved 50 patients who underwent gallbladder surgery and were given curcumin three weeks after the surgery. They were advised to record fatigue, pain and post-operative symptoms. It was found that patients experienced a reduction of fatigue and pain one or two weeks after taking curcumin. The study also added that curcumin worked better and provide more impressive results than analgesics.
Inflammation takes place when the gallbladder gets an infection. Those who suffer from gallbladder diseases, such as gallstones, usually experience symptoms such as nausea, pain and vomiting. Surgery is often needed to avoid further complications.
Many studies have been conducted to see the efficacy of turmeric in gallbladder health. One was conducted to test the ability of the natural ingredient to reduce cholesterol gallstones. In an animal-based study, it was found that mice who were fed with curcumin experienced a reduction in biliary cholesterol.
It was also reported that turmeric has the ability to improve gallbladder contractions in individuals who are not suffering from gallbladder disease. This is believed to be very helpful in preventing the formation of gallstone by emptying out the bile contents from the gallbladder. However, further studies are needed to confirm such claims.
