Just last week in Austria, filmmaker Andreas Sulzer uncovered an underground Nazi complex that was apparently a secret atomic weapons development site. Joining the show to discuss this discovery and its significance to the historical understanding of the Nazi atomic program will be Die Jüdische’s Samuel Laster and Nazi nuclear expert Mark Walker.
Phoenix, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/09/2015 -- No one argues that had the Nazis succeeded with their efforts to build an atomic bomb, the world would be a very different place. Historians, however, still vary in their respective views as to the Third Reich's proximity to achieving that goal. Adding to the debate, just last week an Austrian filmmaker uncovered a massive underground Nazi complex in St. Georgen an der Gusen, Austria, which appears to be part of a secret atomic weapons development system.
Filmmaker Andreas Sulzer discovered an entrance to the underground tunnel complex, located near the Mathausen-Gusen concentration camp, after finding a an American spy's 1944 CIA report that revealed the existence of a Nazi underground atomic weapon program in the area. Radiation tests helped locate the exact site of the hidden atomic research complex, where Sulzer also found Nazi Waffen-SS helmets and other Nazi war implements. The complex appears to be connected to the Bergkristall Nazi armor site, believed to be the construction location for the Nazi's jet fighter Messerschmitt Me 262.
Sulzer told the Sunday Times that, "Prisoners from concentration camps across Europe were handpicked for their special skills – physicists, chemists or other experts – to work on this monstrous project," and that it is, "most likely the biggest secret weapons production facility of the Third Reich."
Joining Between the Synapse to discuss this discovery and its significance to the historical understanding of the Nazi atomic program will be Samuel Laster, an Israeli living in Vienna who is the editor-in-chief of the news website Die Jüdische (http://www.juedische.at) and Mark Walker, The author of Nazi Science: Myth, Truth, and the German Atomic Bomb (Perseus, 1995) as well as German National Socialism and the Quest for Nuclear Power, 1939-49 (Cambridge University Press, 1989). Walker teaches modern European history, with special emphasis on modern German history and the history of ideas, as well as the history of science and technology, as the John Bigelow Professor of History at Union College in Schenectady, New York.
Says show host Mark Toubin, "Sulzer's discovery could create a new level of understanding of how close the Nazi's were to actually producing an Atomic weapon or at minimum, provide evidence supporting previously accepted historical theories. Regardless, he's opened a door to a facility that must be explored and I'm excited not only to discuss the potential findings, but the controversies surrounding the upcoming excavation."
