Chicago, IL -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/12/2015 -- On Friday, January 9th, Microsoft Chicago hosted 25 One Million Degrees (OMD) Scholars as part of OMD's Wisdom from the Workplace initiative for a day of career exploration activities related to technology and innovation.
One Million Degrees, which empowers low-income, highly motivated community college students to succeed in school, work, and in life, launched its Wisdom from the Workplace initiative to provide the scholars in its program with the opportunity to explore numerous careers in high-growth fields through partnerships with corporations across the Chicagoland area. Partners host OMD Scholars at their workplaces for a day of career exploration activities, expert panels, informational interviews, and guidance on how to best position oneself in a highly competitive job market. Other participating companies include HAVI Global Solutions, Victory Center of South Chicago, and Zocalo Group.
Scholars especially loved learning about the career trajectories of Microsoft employees who had attended community college and exploring new technologies that Microsoft is developing.
"At Microsoft we believe in the power of mentorship at all stages of a person's educational journey," said Shelley Stern Grach, Director of Civic Engagement at Microsoft. "It was inspiring to see young people interested in the technology industry and recognize their own potential to be a part of it."
"We are deeply grateful to the Microsoft team for their time and generosity," said Veronica Herrero, Senior Director of Programs and Partnerships at One Million Degrees. "Many of our scholars are interested in technology and Microsoft's staff provided invaluable insight and advice about working in this field. We are especially grateful to Shelley Stern Grach, Director of Civic Engagement at Microsoft for her efforts in establishing this partnership."
