Philadelphia, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2015 -- To keep the Mummers tradition alive in the city of Philadelphia, ADVENT organized a Mardi Gras celebration in 2014 that included performances by various brigades and string bands. The event has shifted from Philadelphia to Manayunk for 2015, but the spirit and inspiration has not waned. Putting the finishing touches on the event's organization, Mummers Mardi Gras is set for a February 22 celebration; parading from 10 am until noon. If the city is faced with inclement weather, the rain date is Saturday, February 28 at the same time.
The event will bring the city of Philadelphia together to celebrate the tradition of Mummery while doubling as a fundraiser to benefit the most beloved tradition in the city. The fundraising will help with maintaining the costumes and pageantry worn by the string bands. At 10 am, the parade will begin at Green Lane and travel through Manayunk where it will end at Lock Street.
The entire borough of Manayunk will be involved in the event, as numerous storefronts and shops on Main Street will have activities for the whole family. The event helps to promote the businesses in Manayunk and provide residents of the surrounding Philadelphia area with an up close and personal experience with the Mummers in Manayunk.
Enjoy face painting experiences, pictures with the string bands, silent auctions, raffles, discounts, and awards throughout the day. It is free to attend, though visitors can purchase bracelets for $10 that offer access to other activities.
