Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance (LATCRA) Seeks Crowdfunding via Kickstarter for a New Memorial Commemorating President Lincoln

The memorial commemorates President Lincoln's November 20, 1861 Grand Review of 70,000 troops of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia.

Alexandria, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/06/2015 -- Living history and preserving our past are vital to future generations. Our children today learn more through visualization. Simply reading about our past is no longer sufficient. Reenactments and memorials such as the planned events at Bailey's Crossroads are necessary to provide a vision of our past so it can be understood and preserved for the future.

The placement of the major public art work in the form of a bronze statue of President Lincoln at the Grand Review was created by the world renowned sculptor of historical monuments, Ron Tunison, of Cairo, New York. The sculpture is composed of the Lincoln statue and the bas relief commemorating President Lincoln's 1861 Grand Review of the Army of the Potomac on November 20, 1861. Julia Ward Howe is depicted in the bas relief. She was so inspired by the review of 70,000 troops that she penned Battle Hymn of the Republic upon returning to the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The memorial will be located in the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

Crowdfunding is sought to for landscape design and modeling of the finished memorial which are estimated to come to $995,000. An additional $305,000 is needed for the casting of the sculpture itself as well as the transportation costs necessary to take it from Cairo, NY to the Northern Virginia Community College Alexandria Campus.

This crowdfunding campaign ends on February 26, 2015.
