Swift Trademarks Lyrics, Stirs Controversial Challenge to Take the Words Back

Maleny, QLD -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/16/2015 -- When Taylor Swift opted to trademark various lyrics – including This Sick Beat – from her hit 1989 album, she may never expected to get a negative response.

However, American metal musicians Dave Tremblaie and Ben Norton have responded in such a way to Swift's trademarking that makes the rock 'n' roll responses iconic. Both artists have come up with, recorded and released hard metals songs called This Sick Beat, which is repeated throughout the entire two-minute piece.

Norton, who claims he is an artist, writer and journalist, said the move wasn't just to protest Taylor Swift. He said her music is bad enough; but, the reality is the ridiculousness of legally owning words.

The musicians' results may not be very insightful into the matter – unless you think using the middle finger and causing trouble is considered perceptive. Still, Norton is a little late to make an impact on the Grammys.

There has been array of response on the Internet – some are perplexed and horrified by the matter, mostly from Swifties (her fans), some trolls are eerily respectful about it, many metal fans are ecstatic and the media is rather curious to see what happens from here.

There has been no response from Swift's camp on the two-minute song.

Although Norton has seen a rise in interest for his work and is pleased by this onslaught, he said he may have the only innovative metal band that's been introduced in Billboard magazine. The BBC, Time magazine and other magazines and TV stations have interviewed him about the entire matter.

The challenge came through Tremblaie, who is Norton's cohort on the XYAX project. He said he urged all musicians reading the post to create a This Sick Beat song, flooding the Internet with it to protest the "trademarked sentence".

Norton's latest work is garnering attention – he has seen an increase of nearly 2,000, but it still pales in comparison to Swift's 73 million.

While just one area of the Internet has accepted this challenge, time will be the indicator if the revolt takes hold.
