Dr. Timm Explains Temporomandibular Dysfunction

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/19/2015 -- The temporomandibular joints are "hinges" connecting the jaw to the skull and are located in front of each ear. They allow rotations as well as sliding and gliding movements in the jaw and are unique as no other bodily joints function the same way.

Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) refers to pain in the jaw and facial muscles. The most common symptoms of TMD include tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, as well as pain in the ear when chewing or opening one's mouth. Dr. Timm adds, "Unfortunately, this syndrome can also bring on painful headaches, migraines, dizziness and earaches. Less painful symptoms include a clicking, popping or grating sound in the jaw that might not be painful, but simply uncomfortable. Some of these symptoms are short-lived while others can last for years."

It is not easy to determine the cause of TMD. Dentists believe it is a result of problems with the jaw muscles or parts of the joints. TMD is usually caused by grinding the teeth, clenching the jaw, or arthritis in the joint itself. "An injury like a substantial blow to the head or even whiplash can easily cause TMD," says Dr. Rick Timm.

One reason for the difficulty in diagnosing TMD is that other conditions, such as tooth decay, sinus infections, arthritis and gum disease, can cause similar symptoms.

To determine the cause of a patient's symptoms, Dr. Timm reviews a detailed history of the joint problem and performs a physical exam. He checks jaw joints for pain or tenderness and listens for clicks, pops, or grating sounds during jaw movement. Dr. Timm also makes sure the jaw functions like it should and does not lock when opening or closing the mouth. On top of that, he tests the patient's bite and checks for problems with facial muscles.

Treatment usually involves no pills, no shots, no surgery, and no unwanted side effects.
